Job Summary
The Guest Support Worker is responsible for the support and safety of Centre guests while in program. The Guest Support Worker oversees in-house evening activities and during out of business hours assumes responsibility for the facility and guest safety. The support worker will use a trauma informed/aware approach when working with the guests and staff. The Guest Support Worker FT and PT may be required to work shifts (rotating: days, evenings, nights, weekend) and possibly double shifts.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Support and direct guests as required, following the Program’s policy and procedures on safety measures.
- Use a trauma informed/aware approach when working with the guests.
- Respect and protect the rights of guests including but not limited to their right to independence, autonomy, and self-determination; their right to choose and practice individual values, beliefs, religion, and culture; their right to privacy and dignity.
- Ensure and maintain guest safety and take remedial action as required
- Deliver the evening and/or weekend programming as planned by the team.
- Provides supportive listening to guests in all areas of concern when needed.
- Encourage open communication among guests when discussing issues, problems, or concerns.
- Ensures commitment to quality, guest safety, and risk management initiatives.
- Assist guests in maintaining respectful behavior
- Support guests in the performance of work assignments
- Support guests that are struggling emotionally.
- Provide support and guidance to the guests as required
- Ensure the maintenance of guest-related policies and procedures
- Ensure guest discharge process and procedures are followed in accordance with policies
- Monitor guest locations on a regular basis for safety
- Role model healthy lifestyle
Knowledge and Abilities
- Demonstrated background and knowledge of Kwakwaka’wakw language, culture, customs, values, beliefs and ceremonies.
- Knowledge and understanding of Gwa’sala – Nakwaxda’xw culture, customs and traditions
- Ability to exercise a trauma informed approach
- Previous experience working in an Indigenous health or wellness environment
- Computer literacy a must
- Excellent problem solving and conflict resolution skills. Good judgment and guest-centered decision making skills in the absence of nurse, supervisor, or counselors; For example, judging seriousness of clients’ mental and physical illness/injury, selecting alternatives, determining when to call counsellor or boat, intervening in arguments and physical interactions between clients and resolving client complaints, and determining and administering appropriate consequences if circumstances warrant.
- Effective verbal and writing communication skills
- Personal experience in addressing trauma and an active selfcare plan.
- Ability to use compassion and kindness
- A positive and professional approach towards guests, fellow staff and public.
- Problem solving/critical thinking skills and excellent interpersonal skills
- Team player who contributes to positive team development and functioning
- Broad understanding of how to deal with survivors of trauma.
Education & Experience
- Grade 12 completion
- First Aid and C.P.R. Certification
- Human Service Worker certificate/training or commensurate combination of education/training and experience
- Minimum of 2 years experience in a similar position.
